It's amazing how many people I meet who are absolutely unaware of the killings going on in Darfur in western Sudan. For those of you who don't know about about, hundreds of thousands of people are believed to have lost their lives since the Darfur conflict erupted in 2003. Systematic human rights abuses have occurred, including killing, torture, rape, looting, and destroying of property by all parties involved in the conflict, but primarily by the Sudanese government and government-backed Janjawid militia. This week, activist around the world are taking action to mark the grim four-year anniversary of Darfur conflict, and to call for U.N. peacekeeper protection for civilians, a sustainable peace agreement, and punishment for the perpetrators. These days of action will culminate in demonstrations worldwide on Sunday, April 29.
