John Murtha is the strong one

If you haven't been asleep for the past two days, you've probably heard about Congressman John Murtha, who on Thursday called for the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq. [Read story.]

Murtha is no wimpy peacenik. As E.J. Dionne noted in this Washington Post piece, Murtha is a "Marine veteran, defense specialist, longtime hawk and traditional supporter of presidential prerogatives in foreign policy."

He served in Korea and in Vietnam.

Meanwhile, Bush's cronies, who instead orchestrated deferments to avoid having to serve their country in war, are now calling Murtha a coward.

Let's see: Murtha has a bronze star and two purple hearts, but he's a coward. His critics pull strings to avoid breaking a fingernail, and send poor people's kids to do their dirty work overseas.

It's swift boats all over again.

Who are the real cowards?
