Today is Live 8, the global mega-concert that will take place in 10 cities around the globe, including right here in Philadelphia.
All of the concerts are free. The purpose is not to raise money, but rather to raise awareness of the crisis in Africa fueled by poverty, and to demand that the G8 leaders increase aid to the developing world.
Some cynics are suggesting that it's just a publicity stunt to serve the egos of Bob Geldof, Bono, and the like. But, in my work with Amnesty International and other organizations, I have seen firsthand how those two men, and many other big-hearted celebrities, consistently put their money where their mouths are, both figuratively and literally. These guys really do care. And these concerts really are about Africa.
